North Yorkshire Education Service set up a Curriculum Safety Group to ensure compliance with current Health and Safety legislation, thereby securing the safety of young people and staff in North Yorkshire schools. This group comprises a number of subject specialist advisers and the Outdoor Education Consultant. The subject specialist advisers will concentrate on the high-risk curriculum areas of art, design and technology, ICT, science, PE and outdoor activities and educational visits. Their work will complement that of the Education Service's Health and Safety Risk Managers, who already liaise closely with schools providing advice on low to medium risk curriculum activities.
The aim is to support schools in carrying out their own risk management procedures and monitor their compliance against expectations laid out in the self-evaluation documents. This will be done by providing advice, guidance materials and self evaluation pro-formas and by carrying out a programme of systematic monitoring visits. The first phase of this work started with securing educational visits and outdoor activities in all schools and is now substantially complete. The second phase will be to secure high risk curriculum areas in all secondary schools, followed by special and primary schools.
