The programme was developed by Peter Hatcher in Cumbria. It is an intervention that combines phonological training (sounds in the English language) with reading in an integrated way. Children are assessed at the beginning of the programme to make sure the programme meets their needs.
The elements of the programme are listed below:
- Reading easy books ( these are books that the child can read with 95% - 100% accuracy)
- Reading a book at instructional level (90% - 94% accuracy) whilst a record is taken of their accuracy and the reading searchlights being used
- Practising letter recognition and formation
- Oral phonological activities based on the Sound Linkage materials
- Writing a sentence or short story
- Cutting up the sentence/story and re-arranging it
- Introduction of a new book which is at an appropriate level of difficulty
- Supporting the child’s attempt to read the new book
- Re-reading the book with the trained teacher/ teaching assistant
For some children the programme may be delivered on a 1: 1 basis. For other children there may be a mixture of group sessions that focus on the phonological activities with individual sessions that focus on the reading elements
